چکیده

The fractional anisotropy (FA) value for Diffusion Tensor Imaging is widely used to determine the anisotropy of diffusion in a given voxel. As the FA value is based on the tensor’s eigenvectors it is not possible to calculate this quantity for HARDI diffusion profiles. In this paper we introduce an anisotropy index for HARDI data that utilizes the L-norm as the most natural notion of distance for square-integrable functions on the two-sphere such as HARDI diffusion profiles and show that it is the limit of the generalized fractional anisotropy (GFA) index. Our index is well-defined and rotationally invariant and thus resolves the unsatisfactory issues with the GFA index.

A Study of Information Gain in High Angular Resolution Diffusion Imaging (HARDI)

Diffusion weighted magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is a powerful tool to investigate white matter microstructure, by mapping local 3D displacement profiles of water molecules in brain tissue. Highangular resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI) schemes have been employed to resolve fiber crossing and more complex diffusion geometries. Most recently, the tensor distribution function (TDF) has been p...

A Sobolev Norm Based Distance Measure for HARDI Clustering - A Feasibility Study on Phantom and Real Data

Dissimilarity measures for DTI clustering are abundant. However, for HARDI, the L2 norm has up to now been one of only few practically feasible measures. In this paper we propose a new measure, that not only compares the amplitude of diffusion profiles, but also rewards coincidence of the extrema. We tested this on phantom and real brain data. In both cases, our measure significantly outperform...

NEX or no NEX? A high angular resolution diffusion imaging study

INTRODUCTION: To remove noise artifacts and enhance SNR, diffusion-weighted (DW) measurements are often repeated multiple times (NEX) along each gradient direction (typically, from 2 to 4 measurements) and each DW image is averaged. This averaging increases acquisition time considerably. It is also not clear what effects it has on the reconstructed diffusion profiles such as the orientation dis...

Analysis of Fiber Reconstruction Accuracy in High Angular Resolution Diffusion Images (HARDI)

Introduction: High angular resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI) is a powerful extension of MRI that maps the directional diffusion of water in the brain. With more diffusion gradients and directions, fiber directions may be tracked with greater angular precision, fiber crossings can be resolved, and anisotropy measures can be derived from the full fiber orientation density function. To better r...
